The April Bookish Box celebrated some of our favorite diverse characters with an array of goodies, including some exclusives!
Many of the goodies this month were created by The Bookish Shop, the side of The Bookish Box that creates goodies for regular sale. Many of the included items however, will not be listed in the shop and were specifically for the box.
The shirt this month really didn’t appeal to me. Designed by The Bookish Shop, the quote, from Jennifer Niven’s Holding Up the Universe was poorly chosen. To have a quote about someone’s freckles makes zero sense to me, especially without reading the book. Again, I haven’t read the book but I’m sure somewhere in there was a better, more universal quote that could have been used to convey the message of diversity.
The first goodie from The Bookish Shop was a stunning adjustable bangle bracelet inspired by the cover of The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon. Though I have not read this title yet, I do own it and it’s absolutely perfectly paired. The Bookish Shop has extras available for individual purchase here!
The next piece was a large pouch, also created by The Bookish Shop inspired by one of the most well-known characters in the book world, Albus Dumbledore. The front side of this pouch features one of his well-known quotes while the other side features a whimsical cactus drawing. I understand the appeal of doing something cute (such as cacti) but it made zero sense and there was no correlation between the quote and the artwork which really bugged me. If you’re a fan of this pouch however, you can grab one of your own here!
Another Bookish Shop design, a small pin was also included (not pictured). A small, open book with the words “Read Diverse” along the bottom, with diverse in the colors of the rainbow. This was a cute little bonus and definitely went with the theme. You can grab an extra one here!
The last item this month was a package of Unicorn Poop Rainbow Bath Salts from the Etsy shop Eye Scream Cupcake. Unfortunately, my apartment doesn’t have a bathtub so I won’t be able to enjoy these but they look great and pair well with the theme of the book.
Finally, the book of choice this month was The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli. I haven’t heard much about this title but I have seen the cover floating around the book world. The summary reads:
I don’t entirely understand how anyone gets a boyfriend. Or a girlfriend. It just seems like the most impossible odds. A perfect alignment of feelings and circumstances.
Molly Peskin-Suso knows all about unrequited love. No matter how many times her twin sister, Cassie, tells her to woman up, Molly is always careful. Better to be careful than be hurt. But when Cassie gets a new girlfriend who comes with a cute hipster-boy sidekick, everything changes. Will is funny, flirtatious and basically the perfect first boyfriend. There’s only one problem: Molly’s coworker, Reid, the awkward Tolkien superfan she could never fall for …right? A heartwarming and hilarious story about growing up and learning to be comfortable in your own skin.
This sounds like a wonderful read and I can’t wait to dive into this story!
